Lexington crime stats show slight increase


Officials released Lexington crime statistics on March 26, revealing a slight increase in crime over last year.

2008 saw a rise of 380 Uniform Crime Reported offenses over 2007.

“Though the population of Fayette County continues to climb, crime trends continue to remain low, with over 3,350 fewer Uniform Crime Report offenses than ten years ago,” a Lexington-Fayette County Urban County government Web site stated.

The follow breaks down Part 1 crimes by category.

Homicide 11
Manslaughter 2
Rape 137
Robbery 529
Assault 1,102
Burglary 2,259
Larceny 6,878
Auto Theft 587
Arson 44

Total 11,549

It would be interesting to see how many of those criminals were caught, how many were indicted, and how many were brought to trial and convicted. Also, how many of the people indicted were actually convicted of what they were indicted for. Any statistics available for those?

The clearance rate for Lexington in 2008 was 28.35 percent. Seems pretty low, but higher than the national average. According to the police chief, the property crime clearance rate was 9.6 percent better than the national average and the violent crime clearance rate 4.4 percent better. Finding out conviction rates would be a pretty tall task with all of the plea bargaining and pretrial charge reductions. All of that info is public record and I wouldn't be surprised if someone has studied it, but I didn't find anything on a quick Google search.
